WHY IN KUCHING
Kuching is a city with a population of over 705,546 located on the Western tip of the island of Borneo. Being the capital of Sarawak, it is therefore well-connected and is easily reached by a short plane-ride from either Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Kota Kinabalu. Kuching is well-known for being one of the cleanest and most well-organized cities in Malaysia and is the main gateway to Sarawak, which boasts some of the world’s best rainforests and is the entry-point for eco-tourists. In fact, Kuching as a city is small enough to travel easily from one destination to another and an hour or so drive can take you from the heart of the city to the wilderness of Mount Santubong or the pristine beaches of Lundu.
Yet despite its size, Kuching is a booming metropolis. The city pulsates with life and energy from its diverse residents which consists mainly of the Dayak (natives of Borneo), Chinese and Malays. Though many languages are spoken in Kuching, one can get by easily with English alone. The many cultures of Kuching bring along with it its eclectic cuisine, popular with foodies all around the world. And residents and tourists alike often take shelter from the humid, tropical heat inside international hotels or modern shopping malls and just kick back and enjoy the rich café and restaurant culture that Kuching offers.
